A Timeline to Prepare you for your Newborn Session

A few months before your due date:

Somewhere during your second trimester, start researching newborn photographers in your area to compare styles and pricing. It is important to speak with potential photographers directly, so you know you will have good chemistry and trust - they will be handling your precious little one, after all! You will also want to confirm they have availability around your due date. Ideally, newborn photos are taken within 5 to 14 days of the birthdate, so booking in advance gives your photographer time to plan so they are available during that timeframe. You can also discuss whether you want the newborn session done in your home or in a photo studio.

A few weeks before your due date:

In the final weeks of your pregnancy when your well into your nesting period and just about ready to pop, look for newborn photoshoot inspiration online or on social media, especially Instagram and Pinterest! Will you have a theme for your session, or will you be incorporating any cute outfits or props? When babies are this little (and this adorable) they are so photogenic and fun to dress up! Let your photographer know about any ideas you have and share your inspiration with them. If you are stumped, ask for suggestions or ideas! A professional newborn photographer probably has more experience with baby photo shoots than you do!

On your baby’s birthday:

Obviously, you will have a lot going on the day your baby arrives, but in between all the celebrating and resting, try to remember to send your photographer a text (or ask someone else to) letting them know the 14 day countdown is on to get those newborn photos! This is especially important if your baby comes early!

We always encourage Mom and Dad to hop in a photo with their baby during their session.

A few days before your newborn session:

It probably sounds impossible, but in the days before your newborn session, think about what you will wear, since odds are you will be in at least some of the photos! You might think you will look awful after giving birth, but that is just not true - You will be radiant and filled with joy! Just do your best to relax and stay hydrated! If possible, have Dad watch the little one for a few hours so you can pamper yourself. Shave, tweeze, & polish yourself into feeling photo ready - You deserve it, Mama!

A few hours before your newborn session:

On the day of your newborn session timing is everything. For the most agreeable and pliable baby possible, you want them nice and drowsy with a full belly during their photoshoot. Can you say milk-drunk? That is when those little bundles of joy are happiest and make the cutest sleepy faces! Try to keep them awake before your appointment with your photographer. With about a half hour to spare, change that diaper and start feeding! Do not forget: if they are calm and relaxed during the photo session, you will be too!
